Fiber Installer
Job Overview
Grand Lake Smart Wiring is seeking a dedicated and skilled Indoor Fiber Installer to join our team. This critical role is responsible for the complete installation, activation, and maintenance of cutting-edge fiber optic and associated services within residential and commercial properties in the Grand Lake area. The successful candidate will ensure our customers receive exceptional quality for their internet, TV, and phone services, backed by top-tier customer support.
Duties:
- Core Installation and Activation
- CPE-IA (Installation & Activation):
- Install the ONT (Optical Network Terminal), including running the pre-terminated fiber jumper from the outdoor NID (Network Interface Device) to the ONT location.
- Perform necessary wall fish (AT-SF) as required to conceal wiring, and install appropriate ducting if needed.
- Activate the ONT and verify the successful provisioning of internet service and wireless network functionality.
- Perform minor troubleshooting to ensure correct service provisioning.
Television Services
- TV Activation & DVR Setup:
- Activate and verify TV services, including the connection of the 1st and 2nd set-top boxes (STBs).
- The DVR functionality is comprehensively included in the TV activation of the 1st and 2nd STBs (if applicable).
- Program customer remotes and provide customer education on TV service operation.
- Perform minor troubleshooting to ensure correct service provisioning.
- Install an additional Ethernet line if the customer requests the DVR be placed in a room other than the ONT installation room.
- STB (Additional Set-Top Box): Install and connect any additional set-top boxes beyond the initial two.
- HWSTB (Hardwired Set-Top Box): Install an additional hardwired set-top box, performing a wall fish as required.
- VAP (Wireless Access Point): Hardwire a VAP to the ONT, then strategically locate the VAP closer to the set-top box (STB) and establish a wireless connection between the VAP and the STB.
Phone Services
- PHONE Activation:
- Activate phone services, which includes connecting a wireless handset to the ONT POTS port or establishing a hardwired connection from the ONT to a central point to connect all current premise wiring (IW) jacks.
- Perform minor troubleshooting to ensure correct service provisioning.
- ATA (Analog Telephone Adapter): Install a pre-configured ATA for telephony services and verify service provision.
Support, Troubleshooting, and Documentation
- AT-SF (Wallfish): Execute wiring in challenging areas, specifically requiring Attic or Subfloor entry for installation.
- TC (Trouble Call): Respond to and diagnose service issues, with the scope of work covering drive time and the first hour on-site.
- ATC (Additional Trouble Call Time): If the resolution requires more time, additional service work will be billed in 15-minute increments per hour on-site.
- HT (Tech Support Time): Provide mandatory hold time for the company to troubleshoot, provision, or perform other duties outside the scope of a normal installation. This is billed at an hourly rate in 15-minute increments.
- TRIP Charge: A fee applied when the installer cannot complete the installation due to a circumstance resulting from the Company's error or requirement.
- Documentation: Accurately record all job codes, time spent (including HT, TC, and ATC), materials used, and service status for all completed work orders.
Testing and Quality Assurance
- Signal Testing: Perform rigorous testing on all installed services using specialized equipment (e.g., OTDRs, light sources, power meters, signal level meters) to ensure optimal signal strength, bandwidth, and performance specifications are met.
- Quality Check: Conduct a final walk-through and system check to ensure all components and services are working reliably before leaving the customer's premises.
- Documentation: Accurately complete all necessary paperwork, service orders, test results, and digital documentation of the installation, including cable routing and equipment serial numbers.
Customer Service and Training
- Customer Interaction: Professionally greet customers, explain the work being performed, address customer concerns, and ensure a high level of customer satisfaction.
- Equipment Demonstration: Educate the customer on the use of their new services and equipment, including basic operation of the router, TV set-top box, DVR, and phone lines.
- Service Explanation: Clearly explain billing, service features, and troubleshooting tips to the customer.
C. Other Essential Duties
- Safety Compliance: Adhere strictly to all company safety policies, procedures, and industry regulations (including ladder use, electrical safety, and confined space protocols).
- Inventory Management: Maintain accurate inventory of assigned tools, test equipment, vehicle stock, and materials. Order or request replacement parts as needed.
- Vehicle Maintenance: Keep the company-assigned vehicle clean, organized, and stocked (if applicable).
- Continuous Learning: Stay current with new fiber optic technologies, products (like new routers, DVRs, or mesh Wi-Fi), and installation methods as required by Grand Lake Smart Wiring.
- Coordination: Coordinate with dispatchers, office personnel, and other technicians to ensure timely and efficient completion of service calls and installations.
- Work Area Cleanup: Ensure the work area is clean and free of debris after the installation is complete.
Education & Experience
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Preferred Experience: Prior experience in telecommunications installation, cable installation, or a similar low-voltage field (e.g., Cat5/6 wiring, coaxial cable).
- Equipment Experience: Demonstrated experience with Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) installation, including modems, routers, set-top boxes, and DVRs.
Technical Skills
- Fiber Optic Fundamentals: Fundamental understanding of fiber optic principles and best practices for indoor cable routing and management.
- Wiring Proficiency: Proficiency in running, pulling, and securing various types of indoor wiring (fiber optic, coaxial, or copper).
- Connector Termination: Ability to install and terminate common fiber optic connectors.
- Troubleshooting: Proven ability to diagnose and troubleshoot connectivity issues (Internet, TV, Phone) using standard industry methods.
- Networking Knowledge: Working knowledge of basic home networking concepts, including Wi-Fi setup and IP configuration.
